What are some practical things I can do if I am thinking about the priesthood?

The Eucharist

The Holy Eucharist is the source and summit of our faith. By attending the Eucharist you are able to listen to the voice of God speaking through the Scriptures proclaimed and the Eucharistic body of Jesus received. In the Eucharist you are given the grace and strength to follow that quiet prompting of God.

Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament

Finding some quiet time to enter a church or chapel and sit in the presence of the Lord, exposed in the tabernacle, always serves as an extraordinary moment with God. Such occasions for dialogue are intimate encounters whereby God can unfold His plan for you.

Parish Priest and/or Vocation Director

This is a big step, but don't be afraid. Contact your parish priest or diocesan vocation director. These men are trained and willing to walk with you at whatever point in discernment you may find yourself.

Daily Prayer

Conversation with the Lord is necessary in discerning a vocation. There are numerous ways to pray: entering into interior dialogue or meditation with the Lord, reading the Scriptures, the lives of the saints or other spiritual books, reciting the rosary, and writing in your journal. All these forms of prayer will assist you in better understanding how God is calling you to serve Him.

Spiritual Direction

When you are considering a vocation to the priesthood, it is essential that you seek out a spiritual director. Spiritual direction gives you the opportunity to discuss your spiritual journey and, at the same time, receive feedback. The priest you choose needs to be someone you trust and respect as a person devoted to God.
